North East Mayor Consultation on North East Bus Services

15th of July, 2026

When I was elected Mayor, I made a commitment to improve bus services for the people who rely on them every day. We know that for too many people, buses aren't reliable, affordable or easy to use, and that's why the future of our bus network matters so much.

The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority is now consulting on proposals for bus franchising, and this consultation is an important opportunity for people right across our region to have their say before any decision is made.

Today, I'm writing with a simple request: please take a few minutes to have your say. You can find the consultation here: www.northeast-ca.gov.uk/haveyoursay

Whether you support the proposals, have concerns about them, or simply want to share your experiences of local bus services, your views matter. Good decisions are made when people get involved, and this consultation is an opportunity to make sure the voices of local communities, businesses and organisations are heard.

The consultation will run for 12 weeks and will close at 9am on 28 September 2026. I'm also asking for your help in spreading the word during that time. Please share the consultation with your networks and encourage others to take part. The more people who respond, the stronger our understanding of what people want from bus services in the North East will be.

You can also hear more about the proposals at my next Mayor Meets event in Durham on 23 July. If you'd like to attend, please book a place in advance.

People in the North East make 115 million journeys by bus between them every year. This is a conversation about the future of a service that is crucial to so many of us. I hope you'll take part.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Kim McGuinness
North East Mayor
